Marine and U.S. Olympian Jamel Herring is back in action this weekend on May 12 on the Lomachenko-Linares undercard at Madison Square Garden which also features prospects Teofimo Lopez and Michael Conlan. Last time out, Jamel fought Mayweather Promotions fighter Ladarius Miller who beat him on points on August 22, 2017. In between then and now, Jamel switched over to Bob Arum’s Top Rank citing the reason of activity as the answer of why he left PBC and Al Haymon. Bob Arum has given Jamel a lot of love and seems to have taken a sharp interest in the 32 year old. Bob rarely ever shouts out fighters on twitter other than those headlining a card but he recently tweeted “Jamel Herring the fighting marine will show all of New York what a champion his is in and outside the ring on May 12 on the undercard of Linares Loma espn boxing event at MSG” on March 26, 2018. This has shown Jamel and us that Bob has big plans for him and wants to start creating an interest around him. It is no wonder that Bob sees the money making potential of Jamel as his story is unbelievable (see our last piece on Jamel, “Semper Fi, the Fighting Marine”), he’s as humble as they come, is a smooth operator in the ring, and as a former military man, he brings in an audience of servicemen and women for his fights. Jamel is also scheduled to fight June 9 as well on the Crawford-Horn undercard, broadcasted exclusively on the new ESPN+ app. The activity level Top Rank is giving him will no doubt get him closer to the title shot he desires.

Focused and ready for May 12

However, he is certainly not overlooking his opponent on May 12, the Mexican, Juan Pablo Sanchez, is a rugged and tough 45-fight veteran. Sanchez has not been stopped since 2012 and Jamel is looking to be the first to stop him in 6 years and burst back on the scene with a knockout, giving a good account of himself and repaying the faith Top Rank has had in him thus far. The fight will be televised on ESPN and or the watchESPN app/ESPN3 tune in to watch Jamel Herring’s comeback and homecoming! Jamel is over the moon that he will finally be fighting at Madison Square Garden, not only for the history it has, but also because it is in his native New York. Who knows what the future holds for the 32 year old, perhaps he might even headline a card there one day. If anyone deserves it, it is him. Jamel has put in some really hard work for this fight, training with Pound for Pound star Terence Crawford and new trainer Brian McIntyre out in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If you’re interested in seeing what day in the life of a professional boxer is like, follow Jamel on Instagram (his @ will be down below) as he takes time out to give fans an inside look into his training. In sparring clips we’ve seen, he’s looking sharper than ever and we are so excited to see him back in the ring May 12. Under the Lights will be there ringside cheering him on.

We wish him the best of luck Saturday and look forward to catching up with him soon!
